It would have made a nice storyline for DNA Journey if a Crufts presenter discovered they were related to some of the dog show’s contestants...
But thankfully – despite Amanda Holden ’s worst fears – tonight’s episode of the ITV genealogy series will not see the comedian Alan Carr informed that he is related to an Afghan Hound.
Prior to filming, Alan’s Red Setter Bev intercepted his DNA testing kit, slathering it with saliva.
Amanda says: “I thought you were going to be traced back to a wolf – or related to Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves.”
Alan’s husband Paul revealed the mishap to Amanda, much to her amusement.
Alan explains: “It fell on the floor and Bev bit it for a second.
“I was really worried I was going to end up at some kennel club.
“When we turned up at Crufts, I was a little surprised to meet my family.”
Alan has hosted Channel 4’s coverage of the Kennel Club dog show alongside Clare Balding.
In DNA Journey, Alan, 44, and Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda, 50, trace their ancestry to Cornwall together and Amanda admits she was “desperate” to be related to Alan, after previous contestants Ant and Dec found there was a family link between them.

But Alan jokes: “I wasn’t so desperate.”
He and Amanda are planning to watch the show as they meet their living relatives this evening at 9pm.
But Amanda admits the teasers have been difficult viewing, because the pair kept “howling with laughter” while they were filming.
Cringing, she says: “I can’t stand it.
“I’m cackling like an old bag.”
Alan agrees and paints quite a picture of them together: “It’s like two seagulls fighting over a chip.”
