ITV has confirmed that one of its talent competition shows won't be returning for another series, with its host having described the situation as a "shame" earlier this week.
Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream, which was broadcast last year, documented the search for two performers to take over the roles of Sophie and Sky in the West End production of the musical Mamma Mia! in celebration of its 25th anniversary. Stevie Doc, 22, and Tobias Turley, 23, were announced as having won the roles respectively following the contest.
The show was hosted by Zoe Ball, 53, and the judging panel included Alan Carr, 47. The comedian was joined by theatre performers Amber Riley, 38, and Samantha Barks, 33, on the panel, as well as singer-songwriter Jessie Ware, 39.
Zoe hinted that Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream won't return for a second series on her BBC Radio 2 breakfast show earlier this week. She had been joined by her former co-star Alan on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on Friday morning.
The BBC Radio host commented: "Aww d'you know what? We're not going back to Corfu [where the show was filmed] - it's a shame. This time last year - packing our bags to go." Alan then responded by sharing: "I loved doing that show."
ITV has since confirmed to the Mirror that the show won't return for another series. A spokesperson told us that it was only ever meant to be a "one off" series to find the two new cast members, who are now in the West End production.
The spokesperson told us: "Mamma Mia I Have A Dream was commissioned to celebrate 25 years of the musical, so was only ever intended to be a one off series." They further commented: "The show sought to find a new Sophie and Sky, who are now starring in the West End musical."
It's however possible that the panel could return in the future to find cast members for a different musical, following in the footsteps of previous BBC shows. The broadcaster ran several similar shows between 2006 and 2010.
How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria? was broadcast in 2006 and saw Connie Fisher land the role of Maria von Trapp in a production of the Sound of Music. The following year, Any Dream Will Do saw Lee Mead win the title role in the revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Jodie Prenger subsequently landed the role of Nancy in the West End revival of Oliver! after competing on I'd Do Anything, which aired in 2007. She even competed against future Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream judge Samantha.
The final musical competition series that was broadcast during that period by the BBC - all of which featured Andrew Lloyd Webber as head judge - was Over the Rainbow. Danielle Hope landed the role of Dorothy Gale in a stage production of the Wizard of Oz through the show.
