Jonathan Ross has been slammed by fans after making digs at some of Hollywood's hottest stars during his Oscars show.

The veteran host, 63, was presenting coverage of the star-studded ceremony in LA for ITV on Sunday where Oppenheimer bagged a number of awards, including Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, 47. Collecting the gong in front of a host of famous faces, the Peaky Blinders star ended his speech saying: "Go raibh maith agat," which means 'thank you' in Irish. However, viewers were irked that Jonathan repeatedly referred to the actor as British as he praised the country's talent.

One tweeted: "Who has ever thought Cillian Murphy was British?? LMAO, Jonathan Ross is off his rocker." While another mused: "Sorry but did Jonathan Ross just talk about British people winning all the awards and then include Cillian Murphy???"

Later on in the evening, the host took aim at late Friends star, Matthew Perry. The Academy Awards paid tribute to the much-loved actor, who tragically died last year, aged 54. However, after seeing the emotional montage, which included the late actor, Michael Gambon, Jonathan quipped: "A touching tribute from the Academy there of some incredible performers and filmmakers sadly no longer with us. Always a sombre moment. It was nice to see Matthew Perry included, even though he's not primarily known for his work in cinema, they probably could have done it without him."

The comment did not go down well with many viewers, with one fuming: '"Jonathan Ross' comment on Matthew Perry was so f*****g unnecessary, what the f."

Elsewhere, Margot Robbie was the subject of another of the host's "ill-timed" gags after the Aussie star missed out on a Best Actress nomination. After quipping she was wearing black because she and Barbie director, Greta Gerwig, were in "mourning" after being snubbed for the smash-hit film, Jonathan was slammed by viewers again as one tweeted: "Ross and friends are debating if Margot Robbie is in black to mourn Greta and her missing some categories [eye roll emoji]." While another seemed quite put out by the coverage, as they tweeted: "This Jonathan Ross ITV pre Academy Awards coverage is utterly painful. Awful jokes, forced laughs from his few guests, HELL ON EARTH."

Despite the "cringeworthy" coverage, The Oscars, which took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, was still the hottest event in the showbiz world.

All eyes were on Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, starring Cillian and Emily Blunt, which took home seven out of its 13 nominations. However, while presenting the last award of the night, Al Pacino, 83, gave a bizarre Best Picture presentation as he strangely introduced the winner of the gong, announcing: "My eyes see Oppenheimer" while failing to mention the other nominees.

Elsewhere, despite the fury surrounding Greta and Margot's snub with Barbie, co-star Ryan Gosling received a standing ovation for his performance for I'm Just Ken, which featured a stirring appearance by Guns N' Roses' Slash.
