In awards season, we love to scrutinise the shortlists and try to work out who will take home the Best Actor and Actress gongs.

This year looks like it could be a big year for the Brits, with Olivia Colman already taking home many an award for her role in The Favourite, while Rami Malek has scored plaudits for his portrayal of a British rock legend, Freddie Mercury.

But for many of the big stars we see gracing the red carpet around this time of year, their beginnings were rather humble - and some even were first on our screens in our favourite soaps and serial dramas.

But which soap can claim the most names, and has helped kick off the careers of the most film stars and award winners?

Here's a rundown of the soaps which have seen the most stars hit the big time from soaps and daytime TV shows across Australia, the USA and the UK.

10. Emmerdale

Emmerdale is sadly at the bottom of the top 10, having only seen three names hit the big time.

We all remember Jenna Coleman, who has own it on Victoria, playing the young queen, and on Doctor Who as one of the best loved companions of all time, Clara.

But fans may not know that EastEnders hardman, Ross Kemp, actually had his first appearance in a soap on the Yorkshire-based show, playing Graham Lodsworth for a short stint.

He went on to win a BAFTA for his documentary series Ross Kemp on Gangs.

9. Coronation Street

Sadly our Weatherfield favourite doesn't do too well in the shortlist either, with only three movie stars to boast about as well.

But these names are arguably a little bigger than Emmerdale's, with Joanna Lumley appearing in a handful of episodes about five years after Sir Ben Kingsley.

And Anna Friel, though better known for her early role as Beth Jordache in Brookside, had her first appearance in TV soap Coronation Street.

Sir Ben, of course, was knighted for his contributions to film, and won the Oscar for his role in Gandhi in 1982.

8. All My Children

The USA daytime show can boast an Oscar winner as well, with Melissa Leo debuting in the show in 1984 before she won an Oscar for her role in The Fighter in 2010.

But she is not the only star to come from the show, as Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar and TV host Kelly Ripa also had small roles at the very start of their careers.

7. As The World Turns

This USA daytime show can bost five movie stars in its alumni, with three Oscar winners having started off their careers on the show.

Julianne Moore, who won the Best Actress gong for Still Alice; Marisa Tomei, who won Best Supporting Actress for My Cousin Vinny; and James Earl Jones, who won the Academy Honorary Award in the 2011, all had their starts in the TV soap.

Alongside the award winners are huge Hollywood stars Meg Ryan and Courteney Cox, who also had their beginnings in the show.

6. Another World

This USA daytime show can sport some major Hollywood royalty, with Brad Pitt and Kelsey Grammer among the early starters.

Kelsey has won Golden Globe Awards, along with plenty of other gongs, while Brad won the Academy Award as a producer of 12 Years A Slave, which won Best Picture in 2014.

Along with those two, James Lipton, Ray Liotta, Desperate Housewives' Marcia Cross and William H. Macy have all appeared in the show in their early days.

5. One Life to Live

The fourth American daytime show in the list, there have been seven stars to make it big in Hollywood from OneLife to Live.

The biggest star and biggest award winner is Tommy Lee Jones, wh won an Oscar for his work in The Fugitive, but has gained a great deal of plaudits for his role in the soap as Dr Mark Toland for six years.

Hayden Panettiere and Ryan Phillipe are two of the big stars from the show as well, along with Laurence Fishbure, Phylicia Rashad, sci-fi star Nathan Fillion and Amanda Peet.

4. EastEnders

Back in the UK, we have seen quite the list of stars who hit the big screen at some time in their careers since their first soap outing - though for some their first soap gig came after their film debuts.

Like Danny Dyer, who had appeared in films Mean Machine and Human Traffic before his soap debut in Albert Square, and Hugh Bonneville, who had already been in Kenneth Branagh-directed Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

But stars Ben Hardy, who went on to star in Bohemian Rhapsody and the X Men franchise, went on to great things after the show.

Other stars include Anita Dobson, Sam Strike, Nigel Harman, Robert Kazinsky (who is set to return to the soap soon,) Michelle Ryan and Martine McCutcheon.

3. Hollyoaks

Hollyoaks can boast 12 stars who have appeared in big movies since the show started, with two Oscar winners among them.

Rachel Shenton and Chris Overton received the Academy Award for their short film The Silent Child in 2018, and shortly married after they bagged the gong.

Other cast members who have been on the big screen include Emmett J Scanlan, Emma Rigby, Nathalie Emmanuel, Gemma Atkinson, Roxanne McKee, Max and Warren Brown and even James Corden.

2. Home and Away

Technically, Home and Away has seen 12 of its former castmembers become movie stars.

Many of those may not ring a bell, like Brenton Thwaites, Sharni Vinson or Tammin Sursok, others of the group have been seen multiple times in the Oscars race.

One name is Heath Ledger, who won a poshtumous Oscar for Best Actor for his incredible turn as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

The others in the line-up include Isla Fisher and Naomi Watts, who has had a number of nominations over the years.

1. Neighbours

Of course, the Australian star-mill is at the top, with a whopping 13 movie stars having performed on the soap at some point.

Of course, all the Hemsworth brothers (Chris, Liam and even Luke) appeared in the show for many years, as well as Hollywood heavyweights Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce and Ben Mendelsohn.

In the awards, Russell nabbed Best Actor at the Oscars in 2001 for Gladiator, while Ben has taken awards for his role in TV hit Mildred Pierce.

And of course, how can we forget Margot Robbie, who was nominated for Oscars last year for her portrayal of ice skater Tonya Harding.

Other celebs born out of Neighbours include Jesse Spencer, Adelaide Kane, Bella Heathcote, Alan Dale (from The OC!) and Kiss Kiss singer Holly Valance.

And who can forget, though not movie stars, the beginnings of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan?! Neighbours casting team clearly need their own award.
