Stranger Things fans have been left anxious for a season 4 trailer after a mysterious new teaser was released.

The Netflix sci-fi drama is due to return for its fourth run on the streaming service, having released its third season back in summer 2019.

Now the show has released a cryptic new teaser video on its official YouTube account HNL Control Room.

The description for the video reads: "Due to technical difficulties, Hawkins National Laboratory will be closed until further notice. We will be back in service tomorrow at 9:00AM ET."

The clip shows seven TV monitors arranged in a circular shape and just broadcasting static but occasionally showing shots of a scientific facility on alternating screens, with some bloody images scene.

French classical music plays in the background, while the show's creators The Duffer Brothers tweeted ahead of sharing the clip: "Are you ready?"

Naturally, the new teaser had fans theorising, with some expecting a full fourth season trailer at the time given in the video description.

One fan tweeted: "AISISNJDDNS RELEASE A TRAILER AND I TELL IF I EXPECTED IT OR NOT".

A different YouTube viewer commented: "GUYS READ THE DESCRIPTION, THEY’RE RELEASING SOMETHING TOMORROW AT 9 AM ET".

Meanwhile, one Stranger Things fan penned in the comments section: "SOMETHING TOMORROW? A SEASON 4 TRAILER? YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME-".

Elsewhere, one fan wrote: "Is it just me or we close to seeing a trailer for Season 4".

Finally, one Stranger Things fan concluded: "We waited 445 days for another teaser. Thank you, Stranger Things directors. You have taught me patience."

The return of the series has inevitably been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with production being halted in March 2020 and not resuming until September 2020.

No release date for the return of the show has been announced but fans can expect all of their favourite characters back - including presumed dead Jim Hopper ( David Harbour ) and his adopted daughter Eleven ( Millie Bobby Brown ).

Speaking of the fourth season to Entertainment Weekly last year, showrunners The Duffer Brothers said: "We're excited to officially announce that production for Stranger Things 4 is now underway—and even more excited to announce the return of Hopper!

"Although it's not all good news for our 'American'; [Hopper] is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, Russia, where he will face dangers both human… and other.

"Meanwhile, back in the States, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long buried, something that connects everything..."
