Sireen: Smart Forests

Abstract

Sireen is a pioneering solution to combat deforestation by integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technology. This innovative approach employs sensors, drones, and advanced computing for enhanced forest monitoring and protection. The essence of our solution revolves around comprehensive data collection. Our sensors capture a wide range of environmental indicators, from sounds signaling illegal activities to variations in temperature, humidity, and air quality. This enables immediate alerts to both officials and the public, ensuring swift response to threats like fires or illegal logging. We leverage machine learning to analyze this data, predicting and mitigating future forest threats. This anticipatory action is crucial for proactive conservation efforts. A key component of our strategy is community engagement. We empower local communities with the tools and knowledge needed for active participation in forest conservation, recognizing their vital role in this endeavor. Accessibility is ensured through a user-friendly mobile app, offering direct access to forest data, alerts, and community involvement opportunities. Sireen's approach marks a substantial advancement over traditional conservation methods. It's a practical, thoroughly researched, and viable solution, designed to make cutting-edge technology accessible to those most impacted by climate change. By innovating beyond conventional practices, we aim not just to safeguard forests but to drive wider change in environmental preservation tactics. Our team, hailing from Florida International University (FIU), is a diverse mix of experts in Computer Science, Information Systems, and Data Analytics. We unite members from Pakistan, Nicaragua, Vietnam, and Peru, driven by a shared passion for environmental innovation and groundbreaking technologies. FIU's reputation for research excellence amplifies our mission to address critical challenges like wildfires and climate change through cutting-edge solutions. We're committed to transforming inventive ideas into practical solutions, underscoring our qualification to make significant strides in understanding and managing wildfires.
