3 dead in North Carolina plane crash

The plane was said to be traveling from Tennessee to Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Three people are dead after a plane crash Monday in McDowell County, North Carolina.

The plane was discovered in the Brackett Town Road area off Vein Mountain Road, officials said.

"It is with deep sadness that we confirm the tragic loss of three lives in the downed aircraft," McDowell County Emergency Services said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those affected by this devastating incident."

It said the Federal Aviation Administration is at the scene and that the National Transportation Safety Board has been sent to lead the investigation.

Emergency officials are asking the public to avoid the Bracket Town Road area so investigators can work.

McDowell County EMS said the plane was traveling from Tennessee to Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Emergency officials set up a media staging area at Macedonia Baptist Church, at 1371 Macedonia Church Road off Vein Mountain Road, and will release more information as it becomes available.
