Ferrell, Burrell score late to beat 87ers in D-League game

NBA: Brooklyn Nets at Indiana Pacers Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Yogi Ferrell and Trahson Burrell scored five points in the last 24 seconds Wednesday afternoon as the Long Island Nets came back on last time to beat the Delaware 87ers in Brooklyn. It was Long Island eighth win in the last 15 games and brought their record to 10-18.

It appeared that the 87ers had put this one away when James Webb III hit a floater to make the score 103-99.

But Ferrell nailed a three, the Sevens committed a turnover and Burrell hit a floater with 5.9 seconds left to give the Nets a 104-103 lead. On the ensuing Delaware possession, Mikh McKinney couldn’t get a shot off for the 87ers. It was the Nets first win over the 87ers (15-11) after two losses earlier in the season.

Ferrell, who’s been on a roll, led the Nets with 20 points (6-of-12, 3-of-6), one of five Long Island players in double figures. Chris McCullough finished wit 18 (7-of-20, 1-of-3) and seven rebounds while both Carrick Felix and Lazar Hayward both had 16 and Burrell had 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting, hitting his only three. R.J. Hunter finished with nine on 4-of-13 shooting, only 1-of-4 from deep.

McCullough and Egidijus Mockevicius had their hands full with the 87ers’ big man, Shawn Long who used his strength to bull his way for 33 points and 13 boards. The 6’9”, 250-pound Long was 13-of-17, including 2-of-2 from deep.

Trevor Cooney, the Syracuse product, made his Long Island debut, playing nine minutes and scoring two points.
