R.J. Hunter scores 25 in Long Island Nets win

Chris McCullough was in Cleveland, playing with the parent club (and scoring four points in four minutes). Yogi Ferrell was on his way to San Antonio to join the Dallas Mavericks who signed him to a 10-day deal earlier in the day.

But even without their two high scorers the Long Island Nets found a way to win, relying on their recent addition, R.J. Hunter, to beat the Erie Bayhawks, 110-96. It was the young Nets ninth win in the last 16 games. They’re now 11-18.

Hunter, who was waived by both the Celtics and the Bulls earlier this season, scored a game-high 25 points on 7-of-17 shooting, 4-of-9 from deep, in 32 minutes off the bench. It was easily his best performance for the young Nets since joining the team six games ago with a 22-point effort.

In an interview with NetsDaily earlier in the week, the 23-year-old Hunter said he joined Long Island in hopes of having fun again on the basketball court.

“I've actually been struggling shooting for like a year and a half now," said Hunter, a 6-foot 6-inch combo guard, after the game. "It was my best day in a while. I was just being more aggressive. I think (in the past) I was too laid back, and waiting for the ball to get to me. So I was just trying to go get it, and trying to make something happen."

The other big contributor Friday was Egidijus Mockevicius, the 6’10” Evansville product, gathered 18 rebounds to go along with 15 points. He also had four steals.

Filling in for Ferrell, 6’6” French point guard Boris Dallo handed out eight assists to go with his 11 points. Lazar Hayward, the Marquette product who’s been hot of late, racked up 22. The 6’6” swingman had broken his hand earlier in the season but has recovered and averaged 14.2 points over the last nine.
