Shams: Pelicans offering J.J. Redick to Nets, 76ers, Celtics

It may seem illogical. After all, the Nets committed $72 million over four years to Joe Harris, who’s younger and has a better 3-point percentage. Not to mention that the Nets don’t have what the Pelicans would likely want most: first round picks. Nonetheless, Shams Charania reports the Pelicans are offering J.J. Redick to the Nets ... as well as to the 76ers and Celtics.

Specifically, Charania writes...

As Feb. 2 looms as the NBA’s deadline for teams to aggregate acquired players in a trade later, the New Orleans Pelicans have focused on the Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics as potential trade destinations for JJ Redick, sources tell The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Redick, whose family resides in Brooklyn, is believed to have a strong preference to return to the northeast area. No deal is imminent yet, sources said.

Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Knicks are also on Redick’s list.

Redick. 36, is working on an expiring deal worth $13.1 million this season, but is having his worst season since 2008-09, his third year in the NBA. He’s averaging 7.9 points in 20 minutes a game (also his lowest workload since 2008-09). He’s only shooting 29.8 percent from three, well below his 41.4 percent career mark. Harris, 29, is averaging nearly double Redick’s scoring and is shooting 47.8 percent from three. Landry Shamet, Harris’ back-up, has had a tough start to the season but had a solid game Friday night and Steve Nash has spoken highly of his overall game.

Any trade between the Pelicans and Nets would almost have to begin with Spencer Dinwiddie who is earning $12.3 million this year has a player option this August. Dinwiddie of course is recovering from a partially torn ACL and is likely out for the season.

In theory, the Celtics could fit Redick into the $28.5 million trade exception they acquired in the sign-and-trade for Gordon Hayward and add some picks.

However, the return for Redick may be limited by other teams’ belief that the Pelicans may have to buy Redick out...

IF he is bought out, the Nets could very well be in the lead once Redick is freed up ... assuming they want him.

Redick purchased a $4.25 million condo in Brooklyn five years ago and in the summer of 2017, he said he’d been interested in the Nets, but once they traded for D’Angelo Russell, he realized there’d be fewer minutes available and so he turned elsewhere. In the end, Redick signed a one-year $23 million deal with the 76ers.

Redick’s wife has openly said she preferred he played for the Nets whose HSS Training Center is 20 minutes from their condo.
