Mom-To-Be Captures Dog's Reaction the First Time He Feels Baby Kicking

A woman who captured the perfect moment of a dog reacting to feeling her baby kick for the first time has brightened timelines.

Known on TikTok as @21_garreg, the new mom recently shared a video she took seven months ago while she was pregnant. She told Newsweek via TikTok that her Ned, her partner's mom's Welsh collie mix, is an anxious and nervous dog, but now that he has gotten to know her, he's been nothing but loving and caring. The two quickly bonded with Ned always sitting next to her.

As usual, Ned rested on the mom-to-be's belly in the throwback video posted to TikTok on May 26. She knew kicks were coming and held his paw next to her belly. She started filming and captured the dog feeling the baby kick for the first time.

His eyes shot open for a second before immediately lifting the rest of his body. He gave her a side eye filled with confusion, wondering what had moved in her belly.

"It was weird; it's like he knew I was pregnant before we'd told anyone," she said. "He always used to sit and put his leg over my belly, so having him feel my belly was nothing out of the ordinary."

And now, almost a year later, she still cherishes the special moment captured on camera. It was just the start of Ned and her baby's friendship.

"That moment was absolutely adorable," she said. "And now he loves the baby. We have pictures of them and he's always checking on him and needs to be close at all times. Bless him."

Can Dogs Sense Human Pregnancy?

It is believed that dogs' strong sense of smell allows them to detect a change in a pregnant person.

Dr. Ann Hohenhaus, staff doctor at New York City's Animal Medical Center, said in an American Kennel Club (AKC) article that dogs have 60 times as many smell receptors as humans with 40 times as much brainpower dedicated to smell. This allows dogs to differentiate between 30,000 to 100,000 aromas and detect altered scents.

Because of their strong smell power, dogs can most likely pick up on the changes in one's hormones during pregnancy. However, it is not believed a dog comprehends the reason for the change, the AKC article says.

Even if dogs do not understand the change in smell is due to their human being pregnant, they still might start acting differently and react to the pregnancy. Owners could notice their dogs becoming more protective, staying attached to their hips. Others might see their dogs become fearful, while others won't change at all.
