A 70-year-old hiker from North Carolina set off his SOS beacon after getting lost near Moose Pond and the Northville Placid Trail on the evening May 8.

Two New York State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers hiked in and found the man later that night. Although he was uninjured, the rangers determined that he needed to rest a bit before hiking out. They guided the man to the Moose Pond lean-to where he spent the night.

Around noon the next day, rangers returned to the lean-to and helped the man out of the woods to the trailhead.
