NGA is a unique combination of intelligence agency and combat support agency. It is the world leader in timely, relevant, accurate and actionable geospatial intelligence (GEOINT). NGA enables the U.S. intelligence community and the Department of Defense to fulfill the president’s national security priorities to protect the nation.

The agency is headquarted in Springfield, Virginia with two major locations in St. Louis, Missouri and Arnold, Missouri. Approximately 14,500 civilian, military and contractor employees work across more than 100 locations in the United States and 20 international locations serving on support teams at U.S. military, diplomatic and allied locations around the world. NGA's Tearline

NGA sponsors Tearline.mil, a congressionally supported publication platform that features unclassified geospatial intelligence from academic and non-profit contributors using open research and commercial imagery. The project supplies open-source intelligence to grow authoritative reports for NGA, federal partner agencies, and general public usage to support and assist in the agency's mission.

Climate Change Impacts on Water Availability in Namibia

Imagery analysis suggests a native melon species in the Namib Desert may be a quantifiable proxy for the intensity of rain events due to climate change. This intensity in turn may be a leading indicator of economic and political unrest in the Namib Desert region because the melon is a primary source of food for the Topnaar people.

The !nara plant (scientific name: Acanthosicyos horridus) is a deep-rooted melon native to the Namib Desert. The plant, often found in ephemeral river channels, is susceptible to damage during major flooding events. Opened in July 2021, NGA’s Moonshot Labs is an unclassified innovation hub and collider space for NGA, its partners and customers to meet, create, collaborate, and innovate. Vice Admiral Whitworth, NGA Director, Delivers Speech at 2024 Esri User Conference


NGA's Director Whitworth delivered a speech for the 2024 Esri User Conference held in San Diego, California.

The theme of the conference, GIS - Uniting Our World, allowed the director to discuss NGA's efforts in GEOINT AI, Geodesy and Climate Security.

NGA can support all three areas, and by default GIS, by improving our predictions, warnings and repsonses for humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
