READER CHIMES IN WITH FRIDGE ADVICE
Dear Heloise: For many years, I have admired the columns written by you and your mother. You both were ahead of many in recognizing the need to protect our environment through our daily actions. Common sense was often the answer. That is why I found your advice today regarding sticky refrigerator shelves not in keeping with your good advice in the past.
You recommended a single-use plastic product to protect refrigerator shelves. My advice is to show household members how to clean off items before placing them in the refrigerator. Thank you. -- Judith MacLellan, Bedford, New Hampshire
CLEANING STANDARD OVENS
Dear Readers: When you use an oven cleaner, be sure to wear rubber gloves and have plenty of fresh air circulating. The fumes are dangerous. Keep children and pets away from the area. You may want to wear a face mask while doing this job. -- Heloise
REGISTER OF DEEDS
Dear Heloise: I recently read some tips your readers offered on how to avoid fraud.
I wanted to share with you that in Michigan, most counties’ Register of Deeds offices offer free online programs that allow you to sign up and receive notifications of any activity in the land records systems that is under your name. There is no charge to these programs, and there’s no need to pay a third party for this protection! Check out your county’s website to get more information.
Thank you for being a source for many helpful hints over the years. I enjoy reading them in the Northern Express supplement in The Alpena News. -- Vicky Kowalewsky, Register of Deeds
GARBAGE DISPOSAL
Dear Readers: If you have a garage disposal, always run lots of water while using it and continue to run it for a few seconds after you use it. If you do not run enough water, food waste will back up into the disposal and damage the unit; not to mention, it will clog the plumbing. -- Heloise
POTPOURRI
Dear Heloise: After opening a new bag of potpourri, I was searching for an attractive bowl for it. There was a lovely bowl that had been in the china cabinet with potpourri and had lost its scent long ago. Instead of throwing it away, I thought of spraying it with air freshener. So, I sprayed the inside of the bag, then placed the old potpourri inside and shook it gently. I now had a new supply of potpourri.
P.S. We read your column in the Tribune Chornicle. -- A.H., in Ohio
AVOIDING LAWN CARE
Dear Readers: If you hate lawn care, one way to avoid it is to plant different kinds of ivy as a ground cover instead of grass. You may have to cut it back once in a while, but you can give your mower away to someone else, then sit on your patio and relax. -- Heloise
PATCHING HOLES
Dear Readers: For a temporary fix, you can quickly patch up holes in white walls with white toothpaste or moistened, crushed aspirin. Just push it directly into the holes. -- Heloise
