Camden County Democrats tap collegiate track star for freeholder vacancy

CAMDEN - One-time collegiate track star Scot McCray has been appointed to the Camden County freeholder board.

McCray, 32, of Camden fills a vacancy created when long-time Freeholder Riletta Cream retired.

The appointment is through the balance of 2011.

McCray was selected during a meeting of  the Camden County Democratic Committee. McCray is a Clemson University graduate, where he was a track star. He is expected to receive his Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey this May.

"I am deeply honored to serve on the freeholder board and appreciate the broad support I have received from leaders throughout the county," said McCray, a husband and father of two young sons. "I am determined to represent the taxpayers as an agent of change in these very difficult economic times. I will support meaningful reforms to hold government more accountable, while maintaining quality services in the face of dwindling resources."

McCray is a member of the regional board of directors of the American Cancer Society; the board of directors for the Settlement School of Music; and the Camden Healthy Futures Committee. He is a former commissioner on the Camden City Housing Authority, and was recently appointed to the Local Selective Service Board.
