GLOUCESTER TWP. — Painting, sculpture, poetry and light will combine to create an Eden-like setting while raising awareness of threats posed by the actions of the industrial world in an upcoming solo exhibition by an internationally respected artist who is a former Camden County College adjunct faculty member.
“The Marlin Gallery presents Frank Hyder” will be displayed in Camden County College’s Marlin Gallery from March 9 to April 8. An artist’s reception will open the show at 5 p.m. March 9. Hyder will speak and conduct a signing event for his book Poet of a Threatened Eden beginning at 7 p.m.
Hyder is inspired by the time he spent living in Venezuela, where he studied his surroundings and their culture, history and indigenous tribes. The show aims to express Hyder’s personal vision through a mixed-media display of two- and three-dimensional works.
“I have traveled far in search of the world within me,” he says. “It has given me more questions than answers. This is how wisdom begins.”
Hyder, whose home base is Philadelphia, taught at Camden County College as part-time instructor during the 1970s. He recently retired from Moore College of Art and Design.
In addition to exhibiting in more than 150 group shows, Hyder has had 80-plus solo exhibitions throughout North, South and Central America. This includes including eight individual shows in New York City.
His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Venezuela and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. His works also are in the private collections of Elton John, Halle Berry, GE Corp., Microsoft and The Franklin Mint, among others. Honors he has received include a Senior Fulbright Research Grant to Venezuela and a commission from the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program “Hanging Garden of I-95” wall mural.
Admission to “The Marlin Gallery Presents Frank Hyder” is free. The venue is located inside Lincoln Hall on Camden County College’s Blackwood Campus.
