N.Y. truck driver given seven-year term for 2008 crash that killed three

CAMDEN - A New York truck driver was sentenced Friday to seven years in state prison for three counts of vehicular homicide resulting from a 2008 crash on Interstate 295 in Cherry Hill Township.

Sheraz Khan of West Babylon is to serve a minimum of 5 years and 11 months of the term before being eligible for release on parole under the sentence imposed by Superior Court Judge Samual Natal.

The judge called him a "risk taker" during his December trial. A lack of sleep, steroid use and a medical condition contributed to the fatal crash, the judge found.

Khan was operating an 18-wheeler on Sept. 11, 2008 north on Interstate 295 when the 11.6 ton vehicle veered across three lanes and the median. The rig struck a Volkswagen and a refrigerator box truck. The driver of the Volkswagen and two in the box truck died in the accident.

In addition to the vehicular homicide charge, was convicted of drug possession, careless driving failure to wear a seat belt, failure to have a medical card and keeping incomplete driver log books.
