Rutgers University-Camden art sale to benefit relief efforts in Japan

CAMDEN — Art lovers purchasing a new painting or sculpture for their home on First Friday in Philadelphia could also be contributing to relief efforts in Japan.

A group of Rutgers students is teaming up with local artists to raise money for relief organizations such as the Red Cross to aid the victims of the devastating earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis in Japan.

"Raise Up Japan" will be held Friday, April 1 from 5-9 p.m. at 144 N. 2nd St. in Philadelphia during the First Friday art sale in the city.

The sale will feature professional artwork by local artists, artwork by Rutgers–Camden students, and drawings by children from Hopkinson Elementary School in Philadelphia, Orchard Friends School in Moorestown, and the Montessori Learning Center in Cherry Hill.

The gallery will be filled with photographs, paintings, drawings, and sculptures.  All proceeds from the art sale will be donated to relief organizations providing aid to Japan.

The event is being organized by Sean Duffy, an assistant professor of psychology at Rutgers–Camden, Rutgers–New Brunswick graduate elementary education students Becky Lomas and Matt Robinson, both of Cherry Hill, and Rutgers–Camden junior psychology major Amanda Squillace, also of Cherry Hill.
