Rutgers University in Camden to host 'big read' celebration

CAMDEN – New Jersey's only Big Read celebration continues with a free lecture of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, April 7 at Rutgers–Camden.

Presented by J.T. Barbarese, an associate professor of English at Rutgers–Camden, the lecture on Their Eyes Were Watching God" will also include free copies of the book for attendees.

Barbarese is the author of four books of poetry and the editor of StoryQuarterly, a publication based at Rutgers–Camden and produced for emerging writers. His book The Black Beach (University of North Texas Press, 2005) was awarded the prestigious Vassar Miller Prize. A new poem of Barbarese's will appear in April's edition of The New Yorker. The acclaimed poet teaches in Rutgers–Camden's MFA program for creative writing and graduate English program, where Their Eyes Were Watching God is required reading.

Thanks to a $17,050 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Rutgers–Camden is able to continue its Big Read celebration for the second year in a row. One of 75 not-for-profits selected to host the Big Read across the country, Rutgers–Camden represents the only community selected in New Jersey.

The free event will take place in the Stedman Gallery, located in the Fine Arts Complex on Third Street, between Cooper Street and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
