Merchantville man pleads guilty to two 'torture' murders in Camden

CAMDEN — A Merchantville man admitted Thursday he took part in the torture murders of two individuals in February 2010 inside a city home.

Darryl Pierre, 20, pleaded guilty in Superior Court here to two counts of aggravated manslaughter.

He faces two concurrent 30 year terms when sentenced on May 13. He would be required to serve 85 percent of the sentence before being released on parole.

Pierre admitted he took part in the murders of Muriah Huff, 18, of Cinnaminson Township and Michael Hawkins, 23, of Mount Holly Township on Feb. 22, 2010 inside a Berkley Street residence.

Hawkins was beaten, shot and fatallt stabbed. Huff was beaten, struck repeatedly with a chair until it broke and stabbed before being suffociated with a plastic bag and rope.

The two were buried in shallow graves near the home.

Pierre is the second of 10 defendants to plead guilty to their roles in the murders. Shatara Carter, then 14, of Camden pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaugter in Huff's death.

Hawkins was killed as part of a gang-related dispute with several of the defendants, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. Huff was killed, the office alleges, in order not to report Hawkins' murder.
