Rutgers University in Camden to break ground on grad student dorm

CAMDEN — Rutgers University here will break ground Monday on a new 12-story, 161,653-square-foot building that will provide on-campus housing for 350 graduate students.

When completed in August 2012, the $55 million project will offer 102 housing units (configured as three- or four-bedroom apartments) for Rutgers–Camden graduate students. Approximately 7,000 square feet of retail space on the ground level will be incorporated into the project to serve both Rutgers students and the larger Camden community.

Under a project development agreement approved by Rutgers, the Camden County Improvement Authority will manage construction of the building on behalf of Rutgers, which is financing the project.  Upon completion, the site and facility will be owned by Rutgers.

This project represents the first new student housing on the Rutgers–Camden Campus since 1989, when the Rutgers–Camden Tower opened to welcome residential undergraduate students.  The Rutgers–Camden residential complex currently serves approximately 520 undergraduate and graduate students, and includes the Rutgers–Camden Apartments, which opened in 1986.

Rutgers–Camden Chancellor Wendell Pritchett said the construction of the new student housing facility as an indicator of Camden's growth.

"This project stimulates development in our host city," he said.  "Rutgers–Camden intends to grow its enrollment to 7,500 students, with approximately 2,000 students living on or near campus.  This critical mass of students living, studying, and working in Camden will be a strong attraction for retail and residential development in the University District and Camden Waterfront sections of our city."

The groundbreaking ceremony is set for 11 a.m.
