Camden County school closures, delayed openings due to major storm for Wednesday (Jan. 10, 2024)

New Jersey school districts have started to announce closures and schedule changes ahead of a dangerous storm expected to hit the state starting Tuesday afternoon with heavy rain that could trigger major flooding and wind gusts up to 65 mph that could cause widespread power outages.

Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency that took effect at 5 p.m. Tuesday for the entire state.

The National Weather Service has issued multiple flood and wind alerts head of the storm. The worst weather is expected Tuesday night as the heaviest rain could combine with melting snow in northern New Jersey counties.

Rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches in the northern half of the state could include some spots that get up to 4 inches. The southern half of the state could see 1 to 1.5 inches of rain with the highest wind gusts up to 65 mph along the Jersey Shore.

Coastal flooding is also a concern along the Jersey Shore and along the Delaware Bay and Delaware River.
