What do you get when you team up rapper-turned-trapper Sterling “TrapKing” Davis with the Cat Fanciers’ Association, two pet healthcare brands, and 10 well-known internet purrsonalities? A CFA Virtual Cat Competition “From Feral to Fancy.”
Voting for fans’ favorite cats continues through Feb. 26 with the judges announcing winners on Facebook Feb. 27 and 28.
CFA partnered with Davis because of his “exemplary work in bringing diversity to the animal world.” “It’s no secret the cat scene is dominated by white women, and Sterling brings a message of acceptance and compassion,” said Desiree Bobby, CFA’s marketing director. TrapKing’s approach to animal rescue is intended to “build awareness to new demographics as well as look to bring about more diversity and awareness in animal rescue going forward.”
Atlanta resident Davis was on a break from a rap tour when he applied for a job at the county shelter scooping kitty litter. He just wanted to stay busy and make a little money. Plus, he’s always loved animals, like his cat at the time, Rick James. “I did horrible in the interview because they had cats in the room and I was playing with all the cats, kissing all the cats,” he said.
Felines compete in 11 categories, including the Main Event, Me & My Cat Lady/Cat Daddy, Beautiful Eyes, Gotcha! Day, Cats in Costume, Outdoor/Adventure, and Cats Looking for Fur-ever Homes.
Proceeds from the event will go to Davis’ nonprofit, TrapKing Humane Cat Solutions, which will use the money to teach cat rescuers the basics of trap/neuter/release programs.
