NJ.com boys basketball final Top 50

The 2016-17 boys hoops season came to an end on Monday night with the conclusion of the Tournament of Champions. There were plenty of upsets and shocking results throughout this exciting season. Check out the slides below to see the NJ.com Top 50.

50-Chatham (21-7)

The Cougars repeated as Morris County Tournament champs in a 60-55 victory over Morristown-Beard in the final. Chatham advanced to the North 2, Group 3 final, but fell to Barringer, 56-53.

49-Bridgewater-Raritan (20-8)

The Panthers bested Scotch Plains-Fanwood in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 quarterfinals before falling to Newark East Side in the semifinals.

48-Atlantic City (21-7)

Atlantic City fell to St. Augustine in the Cape-Atlantic League Tournament final and Cherokee in the South Jersey, Group 4 quarterfinals.

47-Cherokee (21-7)

Cherokee's season came to an end at the hands of Toms River North in the South Jersey, Group 4 semifinals. It defeated Jackson Memorial and Atlantic City during the state tournament.

46-Lenape (23-4)

Lenape fell to Shawnee in the South Jersey, Group 4 semifinals. It defeated Brick Memorial and Cherry Hill East during the state tournament.

45-Rumson-Fair Haven (24-3)

Rumson won 20 of its first 21 games. It claimed the Central Jersey, Group 2 title in a 57-51 win over Johnson before falling to Camden in the Group 2 semis.

44-Rahway (21-4)

The Indians were once again one of the top teams in Union County, making it to the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 semifinals before falling to Barringer.

43-Nottingham (23-6)

Nottingham's season came to a close at the hands of Ewing in the Central Jersey, Group 3 final. It fell to Trenton Catholic in the Mercer County Tournament semifinals.

42-Winslow (17-13)

The Eagles took out Timber Creek to win South Jersey, Group 3 before falling to Ewing in the Group 3 semifinals.

41-Barringer (19-11)

The Blue Bears were one of the top teams in Essex County, and took home the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 title over Chatham before falling to Teaneck in the Group 3 semifinals.

40-Ridgewood (19-11)

The Maroons turned major heads when they took out North Bergen to get to the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 final before falling to Bloomfield.

39-Pascack Hills (23-4)

The Cowboys took out Dumont in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 tournament before being stunned by Jefferson in the next round by one point.

38-Verona (20-5)

The Hillbillies won the Group 1 title for the program’s first state title since 1957 before giving Don Bosco Prep a major scare in the Tournament of Champions quarterfinals.

37-Seton Hall Prep (15-10)

The Pirates took out Paramus Catholic in the North Jersey, Non-Public A first round before bowing out against Bergen Catholic in the quarterfinals.

36-Camden (24-7)

For the fifth straight year, Camden fell in a Group final. It lost to West Side, 51-49, in the Group 2 final. Camden defeated Haddonfield in the South Jersey, Group 2 final and Rumson-Fair Haven in the Group 2 semis.

35-Dwight-Englewood (24-5)

Dwight-Englewood won its first 10 games. It fell to Teaneck in the Bergen County Jamboree quarterfinals and fell to Hudson Catholic in the North Jersey, Non-Public B quarterfinals.

34-Marlboro (18-7)

The Mustangs advanced to the Shore Conference Tournament final for the first time in school history. They upset Ranney in the SCT semis before losing to Mater Dei in the final. Marlboro lost to Sayreville in the Central Jersey, Group 4 quarterfinals.

33-Pope John (16-9)

After losing its first five games, Pope John quickly found its form. It advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament and the North Jersey, Non-Public A tourney. It fell to Hunterdon Central in the H/W/S tourney and St. Peter's Preps in states.

32-Sayreville (22-8)

Sayreville fell to St. Joseph (Met.) in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament final and Freehold Township in the Central Jersey, Group 4 semis.

Freehold Township fell to Marlboro in the Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinals and Hunterdon Central in the Central Jersey, Group 4 tourney. The Patriots won 21 of their first 22 games.

30-Notre Dame (24-5)

The Irish fell in the semifinals of the Mercer County Tournament and the South Jersey, Non-Public A Tournament. It fell to Ewing in the MCT and St. Augustine in states.

29-Montclair Immaculate (14-14)

The Lions played one of the toughest schedules in the state and took their lumps but had impressive wins as well, and took St. Anthony to the brink before falling in the North Jersey, Non-Public B quarterfinals.

The Bengals won their first sectional title since 1977 when they took out Ridgewood for the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 crown before falling to Linden in the Group 4 semifinals.

27-St. Peter's Prep (19-8)

The Marauders had a resurgent season, making it to the Hudson County Tournament final and then took out Pope John in the North Jersey, Non-Public A quarterfinals before falling by one point to Bergen Catholic in the semifinals.

26-Union Catholic (17-11)

The Vikings bested Bishop Ahr in the first round of the South Jersey, Non-Public A tournament before falling to St. Joseph (Met.) in the next round.

25-St. Joseph (Met.) (26-2)

The Falcons repeated as GMC Tournament champions in a 50-44 win over Sayreville before falling to Bishop Eustace in the South Jersey, Non-Public A semis. St. Joe’s opened the season with 19 straight wins.

24-Bishop Eustace (22-7)

Eustace made some serious noise in the state tournament when it knocked off St. Joseph (Met.) in the South Jersey, Non-Public A semifinals, 63-46. It fell to St. Augustine in the sectional final 65-35.

23-Trenton Catholic (19-7)

The Mercer County Tournament champions fell to Rutgers Prep in the first round of the South Jersey, Non-Public B tournament.

The Somerset County Tournament finalists took out Trenton Catholic in the first round of the South Jersey, Non-Public B tournament before falling to Ranney in the quarterfinals.

21-Old Tappan (19-9)

The Golden Knights fell to Teaneck in the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 final after taking out Montville and Northern Highlands in the previous rounds.

20-Toms River North (28-3)

The Mariners put together a streak of 19 straight wins this season. Toms River North fell to Mater Dei in the Shore Conference Tournament semis and Shawnee in the South Jersey, Group 4 final.

19-Ewing (26-7)

The Blue Devils advanced to both the Mercer County Tournament final and the Group 3 final. Ewing fell to Trenton Catholic in the Mercer County Tournament final and lost to Teaneck in the Group 3 final. It defeated Nottingham in the Central Jersey, Group 3 final and Winslow in the Group 3 semis.

18-Hunterdon Central (26-4)

The Red Devils won Central Jersey, Group 4 for the first sectional title in program history before losing a very close game to Shawnee in the Group 4 semifinals.

17-Shawnee (29-3)

The Renegades opened the season with 13 straight wins and stayed hot throughout the year. It defeated Toms River North to claim the South Jersey, Group 4 finals and beat Hunterdon Central in the Group 4 semis before falling to Linden in the Group 4 final.

16-Ranney (22-5)

The Panthers were shocked by Marlboro in the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals and fell to Patrick School in the South Jersey, Non-Public B semis.

15-West Side (25-7)

The Roughriders were Group 2 champions after taking down Camden for a second straight season in the final. West Side fell to Teaneck in the Tournament of Champions quarterfinals.

The Highwaymen gave Patrick School a scare in the Tournament of Champions semifinals before eventually succumbing. Teaneck bested West Side in the quarterfinals after taking out Ewing to repeat as Group 3 champions.

13-St. Augustine (26-3)

The Hermits claimed the Cape-Atlantic League Tournament championship and repeated as South Jersey, Non-Public A champions. St. Augustine fell to Don Bosco Prep in the Non-Public A final.

12-Bergen Catholic (22-7)

The Crusaders suffered another heartbreaking loss to Don Bosco Prep in the North Jersey, Non-Public A final after losing a tough one to the Ironmen in the Bergen County Jamboree final as well.

11-St. Joseph (Mont.) (22-6)

The Green Knights’ season ended with a three-point loss to Don Bosco Prep in the North Jersey, Non-Public A semifinals after besting Delbarton in the quarterfinals.

10-Mater Dei (25-4)

The Seraphs repeated as Shore Conference Tournament champions in a 54-41 win over Marlboro. Mater Dei’s season came to an end at the hands of Patrick School in the South Jersey, Non-Public B quarterfinals.

9-St. Mary (Eliz.) (19-7)

The Hilltoppers standout season in Union County ended with a loss to Roselle Catholic in the South Jersey, Non-Public B quarterfinals.

8-St. Anthony (23-6)

The Friars fell to Hudson Catholic in the North Jersey, Non-Public B final — the first time since 2009 that they failed to take home the trophy. The school’s future is in question, with next year not guaranteed as financial issues have threatened to close the school.

7-Newark East Side (25-4)

The Red Raiders went blow for blow with Linden before falling to the Tigers in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 final for the second straight season. The Essex County Tournament champions graduate some key pieces but return a strong core next season.

6-Hudson Catholic (26-4)

The Hawks bested St. Anthony for the first time since 1976 in the North Jersey, Non-Public B final before falling to Patrick School in the Non-Public B final. Jahvon Quinerly made a strong case to be considered for First Team All-State as he scored 25 points against St. Anthony.

5-Gill St. Bernard's (25-4)

The Knights were stunned at the buzzer by Roselle Catholic in the South Jersey, Non-Public B quarterfinals. The Somerset County Tournament champions return the majority of their team for next season and once again should be a Tournament of Champions contender.

4-Roselle Catholic (18-11)

The Lions stunned Gill St. Bernard’s on a buzzer-beater in the sectional semifinals but fell to Patrick School in the South Jersey, Non-Public B final — the first time they didn’t win the title in four years.

The Tigers fell to Don Bosco Prep in the Tournament of Champions semifinals after previously defeating Shawnee in the Group 4 final to repeat as champions and taking the title for the third time in four years.

The Celtics won the Tournament of Champions for the sixth time in program history, besting Don Bosco Prep for the crown and going wire-to-wire at No. 1. They also repeated as Union County Tournament champions.
