5 seriously injured in head-on crash, state police say

MILLSTONE TWP. -- Five people were seriously injured in a head-on crash Friday night, State Police say.

The accident was reported around 9:28 p.m. on Monmouth Road near Milepost 40, according to New Jersey State Police Spokesman Trooper Alejandro Goez.

Monmouth Road, also known as Route 537, is the dividing line between Monmouth and Ocean counties. The crash scene, Goez said, was near the entrance to Six Flags in neighboring Jackson Township.

Two vehicles traveling westbound and one headed eastbound were involved.

Goez said that one of the vehicles headed west crossed the center line and struck the eastbound vehicle head-on.

In total, five people in the three vehicles were all seriously injured, Goez said.

The vehicle that crossed into the eastbound lane was driven by a 17-year-old male and had two passengers, a 23-year-old woman and 24-year-old man.  The eastbound vehicles were occupied only by their drivers, a 22-year-old woman, and the other a 17-year-old male, Goez said.

Further details on the identities of those injured and their conditions were not immediately available.

Monmouth Road was closed in both directions for four hours for the investigation into the crash to take place.

Goez said Saturday the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
