N.J.’s 2nd strongest earthquake aftershock reported today. Total hits 48 tremors in 5 days.

UPDATE: Another aftershock was reported Wednesday evening, bringing the total to 48.

Days after a magnitude 4.8 earthquake rattled New Jersey on Friday, a 2.6 magnitude aftershock shook the state on Wednesday morning, bringing the five day total to 48 additional tremors centered around the initial earthquake in Hunterdon County.

A 2.6 magnitude aftershock was reported by the U.S. Geological Service at 10:22 a.m. Wednesday about 3 miles southwest of Gladstone in Somerset County.

The strongest aftershock to date was recorded as 3.8 magnitude on Friday. The 2.6 aftershock Wednesday morning and another of that magnitude on Friday rank as the second strongest. Eleven of the 48 aftershocks have been 2.0 magnitude or higher.

The latest aftershock (early Thursday morning) was felt by multiple people in Califon, Chester, Lebanon, Long Valley and Whitehouse Station and also by a few people as far away as East Orange and Jersey City, according to reports submitted to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The three aftershocks recorded on Tuesday were magnitudes of 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5, the U.S. Geological Service said.

On Monday, there were four aftershocks in the area after dozens between Friday evening and Sunday.

Additional aftershocks are likely through the week, experts say.

U.S. Geological Survey officials said aftershocks decline in frequency with time, but they can “continue for days, weeks, months, or even years for a very large mainshock.”

Experts predicted a nearly 80% chance an aftershock of 3.0 or higher will strike the region within a week of the initial earthquake. They also said the area has a 15% chance of one that reaches 4.0 or stronger.
