Vintage photos of winter scenes in N.J.
Winter is supposed to be cold; it brings snow and all the activities that go with it. But for some people, the season only makes them appreciate summer at the Jersey shore all the more.
But in New Jersey, it’s not supposed to be as cold as it was at these record-setting times.
Len Melisurgo of nj.com compiled a list of the lowest recorded temperatures in New Jersey going back to when trustworthy records began being kept. The coldest it’s ever been in New Jersey was on Jan. 5, 1904 in River Vale, Bergen County. That day, the thermometer registered 34 degrees below zero.
That's NOT a 'real feel' temperature, mind you. That was the actual temperature.
Here are the next lowest temperatures New Jerseyans have experienced:
• Minus 34 degrees -- River Vale (Jan. 5, 1904)
• Minus 20 degrees – Freehold and Marlboro (Feb. 9, 1934), Walpack (Feb. 24, 2015)
• Minus 18 degrees – Flemington (Jan. 14, 1912 and Jan. 22, 1984)
• Minus 16 degrees – New Brunswick (Feb. 9, 1934) and Wantage Township (Feb. 24, 2015)
• Minus 14 degrees – Newark and Trenton (Feb. 9, 1934)
• Minus 11 degrees – Atlantic City (Feb. 12, 1979)
This winter, when it’s freezing outside, think of these readings and how balmy it is that day, by comparison. And be thankful you don’t live in Rogers Pass, Montana, where the lowest recorded temperature in the contiguous United States was recorded on Jan. 20, 1954: 70 degrees below zero.
