Fire destroys Lavallette condo complex

LAVALLETTE -- A fire early Thursday destroyed a condominium complex on the small barrier island town of Lavallette.

Fire officials said the residents of the condos, located at the corner of Elizabeth Avenue and Route 35 north, escaped the 2 a.m. blaze without any injuries. None of the firefighters were injured, officials said.

It's unclear how many families were affected by the fire, and police and Lavallette Fire Department officials did not respond to requests for information on the incident.

A video posted on Facebook shows the entire second floor of the two-story building engulfed in flames.

The Red Cross of New Jersey provided one family of two who lived in the complex with temporary lodging, food, clothing and other personal-care supplies, said spokeswoman Diane Concannon.

The Island Heights Volunteer Fire Company said Meg's Grill is accepting donated gift cards for those displaced by the fire.

Multiple fire departments from surrounding towns responded to the blaze, including Ocean Beach Volunteer Fire Company, Seaside Heights Fire Department, Seaside Park Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, Point Plesant Beach Fire Company No. 2 and Ocean Fire Company No. 1.
