Woman, 65, injured after being pinned under car that backed into her

MANCHESTER -- A 65-year-old woman was hospitalized on Wednesday after a vehicle backed into her, pinning her underneath it, police said.

The Lakehurst resident was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 71-year-old Manchester woman, said police Capt. Todd Malland.

The two had returned home around 4:30 p.m. from a trip to the store when the 65-year-old woman exited the vehicle and went to the trunk to retrieve the items, Malland said.

The blue 2011 Hyundai Elantra went in reverse, running the woman over and trapping her underneath, according to Malland.

"Thanks to the quick response by members of the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, fire personnel were able to lift the vehicle off of (the woman) while members of Quality Medical Transport and paramedics from MONOC removed her," Malland said in a statement.

The woman was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where she is listed in stable condition. The woman suffered burns to her skin, broken ribs and internal injuries, Malland said.
