Woman struck, killed crossing N.J. highway

A 42-year-old woman who was crossing Route 70 in Lakehurst Wednesday night was killed after she was hit by a car, authorities said.

The victim, Peggy Acquisto, was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk in a dark area of the roadway with a man when she was hit in the westbound lane of the road, according to a statement from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Paramedics pronounced Acquisto dead at the scene after they arrived around 10:06 p.m.

Acquisto was hit by a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, which remained at the scene. Authorities said the driver did not show any signs of impairment and allowed investigators to search his phone and vehicle.

Witnesses told investigators that, prior to the fatal crash, Acquisto "walked slowly into oncoming traffic" and was nearly hit by another vehicle as she stood in the middle of the westbound lane of Route 70, according to authorities.
