A 22-year-old man was critically injured in a crash involving two SUVs on Route 70 in Manchester after another driver crossed over the centerline in an attempt pass vehicles on Wednesday night, authorities said.
The crash took place around 11:25 p.m. near milepost 34.5 when a 61-year-old man driving west crossed over to the eastbound side, Manchester police said.
Both drivers attempted to avoid the collision by swerving towards the eastbound shoulder, but the SUVs collided nearly head-on, according to police. The force of the crash caused the eastbound SUV driven by the 22-year-old to rotate clockwise and strike a tree, officials said.
The 22-year-old, a resident of East Windsor, was brought to an area hospital where he is in critical but stable condition.
The 61-year-old, who lives in the Browns Mills section of Pemberton, suffered minor injuries and declined treatment.
Both men were wearing seatbelts. No charges or summonses have been issued though the crash remain under investigation.
Though it was raining, weather isn’t believed to have contributed to the crash, police said.
