N.J. man charged with attempted murder after shooting victim in the face, authorities say

Police charged a New Jersey man with attempted murder for his role in a Jackson Township shooting that left one person with a gunshot wound to the face, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office announced Wednesday.

Michael Vulpis, 26, of Freehold Borough, was taken into custody Wednesday on charges of attempted murder and three other related weapons charges, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Police responded to a report of a man with a gunshot wound in the area of Larsen Road at 12:20 a.m. on June 27, authorities said.

The victim, a 27-year-old man, was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was treated and later released. The man’s name was not immediately released Wednesday by authorities.

An investigation revealed the man and an unidentified female were sitting in a parked car outside of a residence on Larsen Road on June 27 when another vehicle parked in front of them, authorities said.

Two men — one identified as Vulpis — exited the vehicle, approached the parked car and knocked on the window, authorities said. As the victim got out of the car, one of the assailants began to strike him, the prosecutor’s office said.

During the assault, Vulpis shot the victim in the face, authorities said. Afterward, Vulpis and the other assailant fled the scene.

Additional details about the shooting and attorney information for Vulpis were not immediately available.
