The decorated battleship USS New Jersey served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. It is a tourist attraction and asset to the Camden waterfront. Likewise, the retired cruise ship Queen Mary was converted to a lucrative tourist hotel in Long Beach, California.
Then we have the SS United States, a post-Word War II commercial ocean liner for years docked along the Philadelphia waterfront rusting away to oblivion. The latest crisis over its future has arisen over an increase in dockage fees, and it must soon vacate its berth (“Historic SS United States is ordered out of its berth. Can if find new shores?”).
The conservancy overseeing this historic ocean liner has done little to restore or relocate this ship. The United States holds the Blue Riband award for the fastest transatlantic crossing to this day. It had military service ferrying troops and, now, once again it faces the scrap heap.
