The Republican Party is the self-proclaimed party of law and order, with a few notable exceptions. If you’re a Capitol police officer, the thin blue line does not extend to you. If you dared to prosecute Donald Trump for his many public crimes, you’re not a prosecutor, you’re a member of the deep state. Republican support for law enforcement is really more of an a la carte situation, where they like to pick and choose what laws apply and to whom.

Trump Republicans love to use the acronym RINO, or Republican In Name Only, to tar and feather the disloyal. It’s clearly a bit of projection because the GOP under Trump is so far removed from it’s small government Reagan roots as to be unrecognizable.

In today’s Republican party, the same system that unjustly subjected Trump to a political prosecution is, without the slightest whiff of cognitive dissonance, lauded for finally putting Hunter Biden on trial. Side note: Anyone notice the conspicuous lack of progressives threatening civil war over the Hunter Biden case? For law-abiding citizens, they sure do like to threaten folks.

This is what a cult of personality looks like, I guess. Trump is the fearless leader, he may be a shameless grifter, but he’s their shameless grifter. He’s the man who created the permission structure for his followers to be their worst selves.

Any trial that holds him to account must by default be illegitimate. Never mind that he was found unanimously guilty on all 34 counts by a jury of his peers, which his highly qualified legal team was deeply involved in choosing. Grievance-based politics requires a state of perpetual victimhood, and every time Trump is held accountable, his followers feel attacked.
