N.J. weather: Cold air will return and 2 storms are looming. But will we get any snow?

Forecasters are keeping an eye on two storm systems that could move across the northern United States during the next six days, but they say it’s too early to predict whether New Jersey will get any snow from these storms.

As of Thursday, forecasters say the first storm system will likely bring rain showers to the Garden State late Sunday into Monday because temperatures are expected to be too warm to support snow.

A bigger storm system could form next Tuesday or Wednesday, but as of now, most forecasters are favoring a track that would keep the brunt of the storm — and the coldest air — north of our region. So New Jersey snow lovers might have to wait until later this month or next month to see our first substantial snowstorm.

The National Weather Service says some snow showers could develop in northwestern sections of the state Tuesday night, if the precipitation moves in when temperatures are below the freezing mark. But as of now, forecasters from the agency’s Mount Holly office say they believe temperatures on Wednesday will be mild enough for rain in most areas of New Jersey.

ALSO: Early signs of a cold and snowy December? Here’s what forecasters predict.

“With another system knocking on our doorsteps on Wednesday, the warming temperatures means that we should see mostly rain across the region, though there is s possibility that some snow may mix in at times especially the further north and west you go through the forecast area,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion Thursday afternoon.

The bottom line: As with most winter season storms, it’s still early for forecasters to get a good handle on next week’s storm impacts, with so much uncertain about the track, precise temperatures and how much moisture will be available in the atmosphere.

But it’s something to keep an eye on.
