Inspired by a newspaper article about a missing schoolteacher in south Louisiana, author Jennifer Moorhead taps into her Louisiana roots with her atmospheric debut thriller. Broken Bayou (out July 1) tells the story of a prominent child psychologist who takes a step back from her career following a disastrous television interview. Dr. Willa Watters retreats to Broken Bayou, a small town where she spent most of her childhood summers, hoping for a respite. Instead, she uncovers unsettling mementos of her past while going through the attic, and the town is shortly thrown into chaos as mysterious barrels containing human remains have appeared due to drought. Willa’s secretive past, which might be tied to the murders, is also beginning to surface.
