Analysis of Federal Funding for Research and Development in 2022: Basic Research

At the turn of the century, the federal government funded about 60% of basic research. Recent data show that in 2022, 40% of basic research was funded by the federal government and businesses account for 37%. This analysis provides details of federal funding for basic research as part of the national portfolio of R&D performance as well as within the federal R&D enterprise.
