UPDATED:

Injured matador Antonio Romero is making a recovery following a surgery to repair his wounded backside.

Romero had the 11-inch horn of a bull called Caporal (“leader”) gore his exposed rear, after stumbling and being toppled during his showing.

Doctors had to stitch the anus and sphincter, but a bedside photo of the 38-year-old bullfighter emerged with a promising “thumbs up.”

According to the Daily Star, Dr. Rafael Vázquez said the horn left “very, very serious damage to his anorectal region.”

The horn “completely destroyed the anal sphincter and very seriously damaged the rectum,” the doctor confirmed.

On the gruesome injury, Romero said, “I have faith and hope in returning to feel, and show, that I can be someone important in the fiesta brava.”

The “toreador” had been teasing Caporal with a red cloth called a muleta just before the incident occurred.

Romero lost his footing and was toppled by the bull as it caught his arm, leaving his entire back exposed to the furious animal.

It then gored the fallen Romero with its massive horn.

Thanks to other bullfighters who acted quickly to distract Caporal, Romero survived the encounter.
