UPDATED:

The Jets players have officially named Zach Wilson a captain.

“I think it’s definitely an honor, I think it’s a role you definitely got to take seriously,” Wilson said Wednesday. “As a quarterback I think that leadership role should just be in place no matter what.”

Remember when there was a negative narrative surrounding Wilson’s leadership skills coming out of BYU based on him not being named a captain to start the 2020 season?

That all looks silly in hindsight, but Wilson said he understood why he wasn’t given such a distinction.

“When I was at BYU and didn’t come off of a great sophomore year, injury or whatever and, you’re not named the starter yet at BYU,” Wilson said. “If I’m not the starting quarterback, why am I going to be a captain, if I’m going to be a backup. So, when the team doesn’t know who the starter is yet, how do you vote him as a captain?”

Joining Wilson as fellow Jets team captains for the season are C.J. Mosley, Folorunso Fatukasi, Justin Hardee and Corey Davis.

INJURY REPORT

La’Mical Perine (foot) and Sharrod Neasman (hamstring) were limited during practice.
