Everton have recalled Ellis Simms from his loan spell at Sunderland.

He will return to Everton on January 1.

The striker has scored seven goals in 17 matches in the Championship for the north east side. Everton have now decided to add him to their first-team squad for the rest of the season.

Depending on clearance from the relevant bodies, Everton hope to have Simms available for their clash against Brighton on January 3.

On Friday, Everton head coach Frank Lampard said: “We have the ability to recall Ellis and we are considering that. It will be my decision first and foremost. There is a balance of what is best for Ellis and what is best for us and to get him in a position to be ready to come in and score goals.

“It is one question to be scoring in the Championship, another scoring goals in the Premier League. When we look at where we are at — and I am talking about options off the bench for us and options to start if someone shows himself — we have to look at everything that is in our hands, and Ellis is our player.”

The 21-year-old has already played for Everton’s first-team. He made his Premier League debut in December 2021 against Chelsea. He has also represented Blackpool and Hearts on loan since joining Everton’s academy at the age of 16.
