Hundreds of teammates, coaches, friends and family attended a private memorial service for Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins on Friday morning at the Allegheny Center Alliance Church in Pittsburgh.

Haskins, a former Ohio State standout and the No. 15 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, died earlier this month at the age of 24 after he was hit by a dump truck while walking on a South Florida highway.

Haskins’ closed casket sat on the altar flanked by his jerseys from the Bullis School, Ohio State, Washington and the Steelers during the 90-minute ceremony.

Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, current OSU coach Ryan Day attended the service along with Pittsburgh owner Art Rooney II, head coach Mike Tomlin, general manager Kevin Colbert and most of the Steelers' current roster.

Team chaplain Kent Chevalier delivered the eulogy, and Haskins’ wife, Kalabrya Haskins, Tomlin and Cedric Saunders (Haskins' agent) spoke at the service. The quarterback’s childhood friends, Mohamed Jabbie and Mykel Traylor-Bennett, also spoke, as did receiver Steven Sims, who played with Haskins in Washington and Pittsburgh.

Haskins’ parents did not attend the service but released a statement saying they would attend services Saturday in New Jersey and Sunday in Maryland.

“We have never met or spoken to the wife, and we didn’t want our son’s funeral service to be the place we met her for the first time,” Haskins’ parents said.

Haskins was one of the top recruits in the 2016 class and played two seasons at Ohio State, where he threw for 5,396 yards and 54 touchdowns across 22 games and finished third in Heisman Trophy voting in his second season. In the NFL, he played 16 games for Washington before joining the Steelers as a backup in December 2020.
