You could pretty much choose anybody. In fact, you pretty much did. Anointing Newcastle United’s player of the season feels like a futile task and — miracle of holy miracles — for once it’s not because everything is shit, everyone is shit and what the shit is the shitting point. No, this decision is challenging precisely because everyone and everything is brilliant and Eddie Howe’s players are the very definition of a team. They are… The Indivisibles.
Plenty of you agree.
Impossible to answer, you can make a very strong case for so many. You'd have to go down the data route rather than the public opinion route.
— BB NUFC (@BbNufc) May 18, 2023
Apologies, but I don’t do data. I do asking on Twitter, which means far less work.
Not a question that can answered, I couldn't pick out best striker, midfielder or defender tbh but maybe try that to create a short list
— Skirgey (@Skirgey) May 18, 2023
No, see above.
This is a cop-out, but there is no single player of the year. This has been a team effort with production coming from nearly every player in the rotation at one time or another. The player of the year is the collective spirit and bond of this squad. They all share in the honor
— g (@Gtkunstman) May 18, 2023
It is a cop-out, yes, and doesn’t help me at all, but I concur with the general principle.
Shauno Joelisaktrippson
— Steve Chandler (@Chandler78toon) May 19, 2023
I like this.
It's either Longstaff, Bruno, Trippier, Pope, Joelinton or Botman. Miggy and Isak also worth a mention and good contributions from Wilson, Murphy and Burn. Hope this has been helpful…
— Graemewhitfield (@Graemewhitfield) May 18, 2023
It really hasn’t Graeme, but thank you for proving my point.
They have all been great. Just write about the full squad with individual reports on each player. 🖤🤍✊🏻
— Shaun Wade (@ShaunWade_) May 18, 2023
I suppose I’m going to have to.
And yet there are the basic terms of my contract with The Athletic to consider, so divide The Indivisibles we must. Perhaps we should just have done with it, opt for an easy life, and say “Nick Pope.” Back in the deep mists of time (last August) — and for reasons far too convoluted to go into — “Nick Pope” was briefly the answer to everything, trending on Twitter thanks to that mischievous fella @ToonPolls.
Nick Pope. #NUFC https://t.co/NlaIlrKZmP
— Toon Polls (@ToonPolls) August 12, 2022
Soon, everybody was getting in on the act.
Nick Pope
— Nick Pope (@Popey1992) August 12, 2022
Pope would be a fine and worthy choice, too. With 10 consecutive clean sheets at one stage this season, the England international has been sensational since his bargain £10million signing from Burnley, barring the brain-fart dismissal against Liverpool which saw him miss out on the Carabao Cup final. Bruno Guimaraes described him as “the best goalkeeper in the world”. And what Bruno says, goes.
So many in contention but Nick Pope is a really strong candidate. Other than the Liverpool red card, he has been very consistent and some of his performances have meant we've taken 3 points instead of 1 or even 0 in some games.
— Chris A (@carchie1986) May 18, 2023
Oh it’s got to be Nick Pope right? Surely given us 10 points alone, I know the red card shadows a lot of his season but my god what an absolute change it’s been having a safe pair of hands on the sticks.
— Alex Bradford (@alexbradford0) May 18, 2023
On a related subject, we could any pick any member of the second-meanest defence in the division.
Like Kieran Trippier…
Trippier has been the best in his position in the PL all season amongst strong competition league-wide. No other Newcastle player can claim that they've been the best in the league in their position so we'd give it to captain fantastic 🖤🤍🖤
— The Magpie Group (@MagpieGroupNUFC) May 18, 2023
Trippier. Not afraid to talk big on camera. Set the standard all season long.
Always positive. I’ve never seen a man so consistently applaud a teammate for at least trying after they’ve overhit a through ball out of play.— NUFCThreatLevel (@NUFCThreatLevel) May 18, 2023
Or Fabian Schar, resurrected from centre-half purgatory under Eddie Howe’s management.
Fabian Schar. World class season; his defensive awareness has improved 10 fold since the last few years, some key passes and a goal or 2 as well. Centre of the best defence in England and helped a young 21 year old settle in alongside him in his first year in the Prem. Consistent
— Lewy (@nufclewizc) May 18, 2023
Fabián Schar easily imo. He’s the only player in the team who hasn’t really had any fluctuation in form and has been the best defender in the best defence in the league more or less
— Paul Gibbins (@paulgibbins) May 18, 2023
Fabian Schär. He’s constantly overlooked maybe because he isn’t new and didn’t cost a fortune but he has been consistently solid at the back all season.
— Sav Mondo (@SavMondo) May 18, 2023
(Side-note I: @SavMondo celebrates the weekly anniversary — weekiversary? — of Schar signing his latest contract and may not be a wholly independent participant in this particular debate. God, he is handsome though).
Botman, the difference he’s made to that back line is unreal. Might not be a big talker but he leads by example. He’s managed to make Schar look like a decent defender this season too
— Dan (@DZ1892) May 18, 2023
They've all been fantastic, but I'll have to go with Botman – ridiculously consistent and shades of Coloccini circa 2010-12.
— Kartikey Srivastava (@KSrivastava17) May 18, 2023
I think it has to be Botman. Our defence has transformed since he arrived, not to say others haven’t played their part but if you take Botman away I’d be really concerned. Hope he stays for years!
— Phil (@Seubz) May 18, 2023
Dan Burn; big, from Blyth, born to dance.
I agree…
It really is the hardest one to answer for a long time.
The goal scorers always stand out..
But I look for the hidden powers behind the throne.
So I would vote between Longstaff and Burn (defying critics and being LB all season!)— Hawaay61 (@Hawaay61) May 18, 2023
Dan burn https://t.co/2sFh7K6pqE
— Sean (@SeanRushworth) May 18, 2023
(Sidenote II: I adore Dan. He has played out of position all season, his shoulder keeps dislocating, he plays every game as if it is his first or his last and we are living our dream through him living his. His earliest memory of watching Newcastle is Sir Bobby Robson’s Champions League team and his legacy is to lead the team back there. What a story, what a player, what a very tall man).
But then there’s midfield, too, and the silky, steely influence of Newcastle’s great game-changer, Bruno Guimaraes…
You can pick anyone out of a hat but Bruno is the one.
Without him we aren't anywhere near the same team.
— G. Pirlo (@GingerPirlo_) May 18, 2023
Has to be Bruno. Primarily because when he has been missing, our team hasn’t ticked with the same level of class, whereas when he’s featured, he’s elevated our team. But agreed, very hard to call. Could be any number of players for different reasons.
— Mohsin (@mzk_nufc) May 18, 2023
Has to be Bruno. Not even a doubt pre-injury. The only irreplaceable player in the team. If he's missing we struggle. That he's had to keep playing tho injured, can't be rested, shows how vital he is & highlights our lack of quality depth
— Ian Dunbar (@IanDunbar001) May 18, 2023
And how can you possibly look beyond Joelinton, enforcer, powerhouse and, in Alan Shearer’s exquisite words, a “fucking beast”?
Joelinton player of the season and Sean Longstaff most improved player of the season for me personally
— Adam Pearson (YT) ⚫️⚪️ (@AdamP1242) May 18, 2023
Very hard George because they’ve all been outstanding but Joelinton gets it for me!!👍👍🏁🏁
— BUDAPEST69 (@BUDAPEST691) May 19, 2023
Big Joe all day long for me. Absolute beast of a player whose living and breathing the spirit of the team. Never known a more improved player. Wouldn’t sell him for £100m this summer.
— Richard Gordon (@rgordon1983) May 18, 2023
What about Sean Longstaff, a forgotten footballer two years ago and now Newcastle’s redemptive running man?
Sean Longstaff is the correct answer, George.
— Graeme Bell (@GraemeBell_) May 18, 2023
so hard to choose but i’m leaning towards sean longstaff. completely surpassed all expectations, a huge miss when he’s not on the pitch and that feeling when he scored the 2 against southampton in the semi final will live long in the memory
— jess 🪩 (@jessc1892) May 18, 2023
Longstaff, he’s been our unsung hero. Going from his lowest point mentally & poor performances on the pitch to being the first name on the team sheet has taken a lot of hard work from him. Love the lad 🖤🤍 @seanlongstaff97 pic.twitter.com/FQFaut7qEI
— Laura NUFC1892 🖤🤍🖤 (@lspark89) May 18, 2023
Sean longstaff- he is a “you never know what you had until it’s gone” type of player and we bloody miss him.
— Clayton hughes (@Clayton65608063) May 18, 2023
Or Jacob Murphy, another boyhood Newcastle fan, another to lift his levels exponentially and also King Shithouse.
Tough, because it’s been a season of two halves. First half of the season it was undoubtedly Miggy, for all those incredible goals that put us where we are now. Overall is tougher… I’m tempted to give it to our pacy, direct, shit-housing, near-ever-present winger: Jacob Murphy!!
— Steve Mallam (@SteveMallam) May 18, 2023
Jacob Murphy, not because he’s been the best player this season he hasn’t but he does just epitomise everything Eddie Howe and this team stands for. His attitude is fantastic and he’s improved significantly as a player. He’s also worth a shout for his shithousery alone
— David Taylor (@oldjarrovian) May 18, 2023
But then here come the Joe Willock fans …
I'm gonna go Willock or Botman
— Tayyib Abu (@TayyibAbu1) May 18, 2023
Willock or Longstaff. For all the reasons you already know
— Adam Wilson (@__adamwilson) May 18, 2023
I think I would look at Willock. When he’s played his best he has looked unplayable. Runs past Walker. Links play. The assist for Isak. If he adds consistency to his game he’s elite player
— Paul Newbegin (@paulnewb) May 18, 2023
And perma-smiler Miguel Almiron has his tribe, too.
Almiron for me, even when hes not quite at it his workrate has been unbelievable, the goals, overall performances and his attitude make him the stand out for me. Trippier and Big Joe close.
— Graeme (@graemeTro) May 18, 2023
for me there's two.
Almiron for the difference in attitude and output this season since the former guy who did no coaching or fitness work.
Schar for the fact that he's been one of our most consistent players – again – the difference in him since we bought in an actual coach— Damo (@dcb72) May 18, 2023
See what I mean, though? This debate, this choice of meaningful candidates is ridiculous and beautiful.
We can’t forget that Callum Wilson has scored 18 league goals this season.
It’s almost impossible. At a push I’d say Wilson purely for his goals
— Spugsy 👻 (@GeordieBearDXB) May 18, 2023
@CallumWilson for me. Goals at the beginning AND the closing stages of the season. Out with injuries for several weeks but may yet reach 20 goals which is phenomenal. Leading scorer in a team that sits 3rd and played a cup final. Need we more reasons?
— Toon Army India (@ToonArmyIndia) May 18, 2023
And some of those gossamer touches from Alexander Isak… Wow.
But really probably Isak. Nothing inspires me more than adult career changes and to go from ballerina to Premier League footballer is something special
— Charlotte Robson (@charlottehope) May 18, 2023
Maybe Isaac for his sublime moments of skill and influence on the rest of the team (hoping he’ll be ithe difference for us tonight )
— Dave Rees (@johndavidrees) May 18, 2023
Even the players who don’t play very often are picking up votes.
Maybe it would be easier to ask ‘who isn’t the player of the season?’. I think for me it has to be Lascelles for his two yellow cards from the bench.
— TV’s Joseph Fowler (@KumaYama100) May 18, 2023
Lascelles has the distinction of earning two cautions for disrupting opposition throw-ins while warming up. And although that’s a bit of a laugh, the point is they’re all in it together, which is what makes this season and this team so special.
But we’re running out of space and must make a choice. Here is Shearer’s. “For me, player of the season has been Tripper,” he says. “He has been the catalyst for everything, the first signing after the takeover, the first one through the door, an England international, La Liga winner and him coming to join the fight sent a message out. He’s lifted everybody and he’s just been a proper, proper captain all season.”
And Trippier is officially Newcastle’s official choice, too.
The first signing of our new era. ❤️
Your 22/23 Player of the Season – Kieran Trippier. 👏 pic.twitter.com/N3qtWRdkfN
— Newcastle United FC (@NUFC) May 22, 2023
In spite of all the competition, it is difficult to dispute.
extremely hard but in terms of unwavering consistency and all-round play, surely Trippier. Saw him have one off game (Villa, everyone had an off day) but defensive powerhouse and creating the most chances of defenders in the league (?), plus an INCREDIBLE leader – got to be him.
— Natasha (@NatashaNUFC) May 18, 2023
Sets tone, leads defence through games, creates chances (highest in Prem, I think), has galvanised Miggy, prompted teams to change tactics to minimise conceding free kicks, and is by far the player we’d miss most if he wasn’t around. You can bet your sweet cheeks it’s Trippier.
— Jeff Livingstone (@NCLJeff) May 18, 2023
I have no idea how you know this Jeff, but my cheeks are indeed very sweet, thank you!
I can’t look past Trippier. Consistently solid. Leader on the pitch. Sets the standards. A danger from set pieces, though we should score from more of them. A transformational signing and the best RB we’ve had in the PL.
— Phillip Your Cans (@Phillwillkill) May 18, 2023
Trippier. He has raised standards at the club, is part of one of the best defences in the league and has an impressive chances created and assists record. Elite level player and leader.
— Jonny (@JonhanG) May 18, 2023
I don't envy your task at all! Whilst the whole team have exceeded all expectations, it all stems from Trippier and him signing in the first place. The experience, the belief, the professionalism, the encouragement. Unequivocally amongst the pantheon of the all-time NUFC greats.
— Alex Gill (@Hey_Gill) May 18, 2023
Trippier is the tone-setter, the tempo-setter, the standard-bearer and standard-lifter, captain on the pitch, leader in the dressing room, first among equals. But this Newcastle are a collective, tightly bound together, better than the sum of their parts, and to choose one feels wrong. Have they ever been like this before — so strong, so purposeful, so difficult to pick apart? Player of the season? It’s all of them, indivisible and United and so very, very good.
