Young Liverpool midfielder Leighton Clarkson has completed a permanent move to Aberdeen.

An undisclosed fee was agreed between the clubs with the 21-year-old signing a four-year contract.

Clarkson enjoyed an impressive season on loan at Aberdeen in 2022-23 with manager Barry Robson keen to retain his services.

Robson said: “There is no doubt Leighton had a positive impact during his time with us last season and its hugely encouraging that he has now chosen this club as his home, and the best place for his continued development.

“He is a brilliant prospect and exactly the type of player we want here at the club. He’s young, hungry, and technically very good.

“He was much admired for the creativity he brought on the pitch and showed a real affinity with the supporters during his time at Pittodrie last season.

“We are shaping the squad up for playing both in Europe and domestically and will be looking to announce more new faces in the very near future.”

The midfielder, who came through the academy at Liverpool and made three senior appearances, scored six goals and contributed nine assists in 38 matches for the Scottish Premiership club as he helped them qualify for Europe.

With Liverpool open to a sale, he also attracted interest from other Scottish top-flight clubs and a number of Championship teams. However, Aberdeen was his destination of choice and they moved quickly to agree a deal with Liverpool.
