Newcastle United have opened talks with Southampton over a potential deal for Tino Livramento.

The 20-year-old right-back made just two appearances for Southampton last season as he spent the majority of the campaign recovering from the ACL injury he sustained in April 2022.

His two appearances came from the bench in Southampton’s final two games of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool.

Southampton are hopeful Livramento will stay but their relegation to the Championship could see the defender depart.

Livramento, who rose through the ranks of Chelsea’s academy before joining Southampton in August 2021 on a five-year deal, has made 34 appearances for the south coast side.

The England Under-21 international will compete with Kieran Trippier for the right-back berth if he does move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle also signed fellow right-back Harrison Ashby from West Ham United for £2million in January but he is yet to make a senior appearance.

Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s head coach,  is looking to strengthen his side ahead of competing in next season’s Champions League.

They are also expected to sign Italy international Sandro Tonali for a fee in the region of €70million.

Tonali, who also attracted interest from Chelsea, emerged as a key target early in the window, with Howe seeking two midfielders after the club secured Champions League football next season.

Tonali’s transfer could match the club-record purchase of Alexander Isak, who arrived at the club from Real Sociedad last summer.
