It’s a particularly brutal week in the NFL, as over 1,100 players around the league will lose their current jobs when rosters are reduced after the final preseason game. Like every other team, the 49ers must cut their roster from 90 to 53 players by the Sept. 1 deadline. Position battles, of course, must also be resolved by the season opener.
The full spectrum of emotions is coming to NFL locker rooms, and offensive lineman Josh Garnett joined the “No Brakes” podcast to discuss this difficult week and much, much more. Garnett is a big talker and an entertaining listen.
Garnett’s appearance is timely because his career is smack dab in the middle of a fascinating crossroads: After a year of intense physical conditioning to prepare his body for success in the 49ers’ outside zone blocking scheme, Garnett is embroiled in a battle with veteran Mike Person for the team’s right guard spot.

On Tuesday, coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that this competition will come down to the wire, and Garnett joined the podcast to discuss all the nuances surrounding the next few days.
There’s also talk of Garnett’s history with Jim Harbaugh and a peek into Garnett’s method of commuting to Levi’s Stadium — which he thoroughly enjoys. The back half of the show features Matt Barrows, who has some interesting thoughts on the final complexion of the 49ers’ 53-man roster.
If you play this podcast in the car, we promise that you’ll enjoy your commutes just as much as Garnett enjoys his.
