Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill exited Sunday’s 24-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in London with an apparent ankle injury. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Titans coach Mike Vrabel told reporters Monday that Tannehill suffered a high ankle sprain, the same injury that caused him to miss time in 2022.
  • On Sunday, Tannehill was carted to the locker room after walking off under his own power. He appeared to be limping following a Tennessee drive.
  • Backup Malik Willis replaced Tannehill, who went 8-of-16 passing for 76 yards and an interception before exiting early in the fourth quarter.
  • Willis, a third-round pick in 2022, appeared in one game this season and had yet to throw a pass before Sunday. He went 4-of-5 with 74 yards against Baltimore.

Why Willis?

For those who don’t follow the Titans closely and wonder why it’s Willis instead of Will Levis — the guy they moved up to the top of the second round to draft — in at quarterback, Willis staved off Levis for the backup job in camp. This was aided by Levis suffering a leg injury that kept him out of the final two preseason games, but Willis also has improved significantly after a rough rookie season.

Levis remains the favorite to replace Tannehill as the starter in 2024, but it’s possible the competition between the two could carry over into the next preseason camp. Joe Rexrode, Titans senior writer
