TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama received its first transfer portal commitment since Nick Saban’s retirement when former Washington quarterback Austin Mack announced his decision to transfer via his X account Thursday evening. Mack, who reclassified to the 2023 class from the 2024 class during last year’s cycle, was a freshman last season at Washington, did not appear in any games and redshirted.

In his final year of high school (2022), Mack completed 269 of 382 pass attempts (70.4 percent) for 3,498 yards with 40 touchdowns and five interceptions, with two rushing touchdowns. He led his Folsom High School team to a 12-2 record and a Sec Joaquin Section D1 championship in California.

Mack, a Folsom, Calif., native, was a consensus top-100 prospect in the 2023 class (No. 73 in the 247Sports Composite) and was the No. 8 quarterback. The 6-foot-6, 226-pound prospect has four years of eligibility remaining. Two other players from Washington are set to arrive in Tuscaloosa this weekend for official visits: cornerback Jabbar Muhammad and offensive lineman Parker Brailsford.

What does it mean for Alabama?

Alabama has four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster: Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson, Dylan Lonergan and Julian Sayin. In Mack, Alabama’s getting another talented player who immediately will provide competitive depth due to having a year under coach Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb’s system as a developmental piece. Mack mostly operates from the pocket but moves well for his size and can maneuver his body to make throws at all three levels. His development will continue under the coaches who recruited him, and Alabama will carry five quarterbacks again into 2024.
