The San Francisco 49ers opened as 2-point favorites over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58 on BetMGM and despite some line movement in both directions, it has returned to -2. The total opened at 47.5 points and hasn’t moved off that number much.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, Feb. 11 from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The game will be broadcast on CBS.

Kansas City is in its fourth Super Bowl in the last five seasons and will play in its sixth Super Bowl in team history after it beat the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 in the AFC Championship on Sunday.

The 49ers are playing in their eighth Super Bowl and seek their first championship since they beat the Chargers 49-26 in Super Bowl XXIX. They beat the Detroit Lions 34-31 in the NFC Championship.

It took a wild come-from-behind victory after the Lions led 24-7 at halftime. The 49ers used a 17-point third quarter and some questionable decision-making from Lions coach Dan Campbell (“I don’t regret those decisions,” he said after the game) to propel themselves to the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs and 49ers did not play during the 2023 regular season. Kansas City did play at San Francisco last year and the Chiefs blew out the 49ers 44-23 in Week 7. San Francisco then won 12 straight games before losing to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.

Kansas City beat San Francisco 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV in Miami. The 49ers led 20-10 entering the fourth quarter before the Chiefs outscored them 21-0 in the fourth quarter to give Patrick Mahomes his first Super Bowl and his first Super Bowl MVP.

When Super Bowl 58 odds opened up after the Chiefs won last year’s Super Bowl, they were the favorite to repeat at +600, but almost every team is a favorite to repeat after it wins the Super Bowl. San Francisco had the fifth-best odds when they opened last year at +900. Those odds moved to +1000 before the regular season began despite the Niners getting good news on Brock Purdy’s recovery from Tommy John surgery after he suffered an elbow injury in the NFC Championship Game last year.

The spreads and odds around Super Bowls are always interesting because the betting public has a lot more influence on a spread than it usually does. Typically, for a game that doesn’t garner a lot of betting action, odds are opened up at lower limits and sharps will bet into that line and it won’t move a lot during a week unless there’s a big injury or some big news around a team.

With a Super Bowl, the public can affect a line and we may be seeing that with the line moving towards the Chiefs early after the line was posted at sportsbooks across the United States.
