Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Madrid Open. The world No 2, who came through a three-set encounter with Russian Karen Khachanov yesterday (Tuesday) will not play his quarter-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada.

The Italian complained of soreness in his right hip midway through his victory over Khachanov, who had taken the first set before Sinner recovered to win the next two.

“Very sad to have to withdraw from my next match here in Madrid,” he wrote in a statement on X.

“My hip has been bothering me this week and has slowly been getting more painful. Taking the advice from the doctors we decided it’s best to not play further and make it worse.”

The news puts Sinner’s participation at the Italian Open in doubt, which begins in Rome on May 8. His withdrawal follows the exit from Madrid of defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who lost to Andrey Rublev and is also struggling with injury.
