State Highlights

Utah was already largely Republican, but the midterm elections showed that even a conservative state can shift sharply to the right.

In the Senate race, the Republican state convention tossed out Senator Robert F. Bennett after 18 years in office, and left two candidates with values aligned with the Tea Party movement to fight it out in the Republican primary. The winner of that contest, Mike Lee, a 39-year-old former clerk for Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., defeated the Democratic candidate, Sam Granato, with promises to pass a balanced budget amendment and repeal the health care overhaul.

The governor’s race in Utah pitted the Republican incumbent, Gary R. Herbert, against Peter Corroon, a Democrat. Mr. Herbert won after maintaining a very comfortable lead throughout the campaign. He has held the governorship since last year, when President Obama appointed Jon Huntsman Jr., a Republican, ambassador to China.

In the state’s three Congressional races, the sole Democratic incumbent, Jim Matheson, defeated the Republican challenger, Morgan Philpot.
